Brad Guarino: Serafimovo Paintings: Consistency of Light Series

Statement

In the summer of 2005 my wife and I were on artist residencies in Polkovnik Serafimovo, a small village in southern Bulgaria. The dizzying changes occurring in this former communist country seemed at once bizarre and poetic. Abandoned communist-era building projects stood unfinished alongside active modern construction sites; cell phones and satellite dishes were often found in the same households as horse carts and scythes; people who used email and surfed the Internet still walked across town to pay their bills in person. This series was a response to my experience of this virtual time-warp.
